Enza
Construction, with a proven track record in the building industry over 20 years
and known for delivering world-class infrastructure projects, is nearing
completion of the R3 billion Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital in
KwaMashu.
“Dr
Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital is the largest hospital currently in
development in South Africa and once completed will also be amongst the largest
public healthcare facilities in the country,” said Clinton Crowie,
Executive Director of Enza Construction.
The
hospital, named in honour of Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme, one of the first black
lawyers in South Africa and a founding member of the African National Congress
(ANC), is scheduled to open its doors by December 2019.
The
development of the 500-bed regional hospital forms part of the
KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health Hospital Revitalisation Programme,
a project instrumental to a broader national programme aimed at providing
much needed health facilities throughout South Africa, and will provide
1.5 million people living in KwaMashu, Inanda, Ntuzuma and surrounding
communities in the northern Durban catchment area with a full spectrum of
up-to-date, world-class medical services.
Located
near Bridge City Mall, a new mixed-use precinct that serves as a business,
commercial and transportation hub for the
eThekwini Municipality, the hospital will alleviate pressure on the
over-burdened Mahatma Gandhi Memorial and Addington Hospitals.
“We
are extremely proud to have been involved in the development and construction
of the hospital, particularly since it is a facility that it will also create
much-needed new employment opportunities in the area,” said Crowie.
Since
construction began on the 65,000m² Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital in
January 2015, Enza Construction has employed 1,800 people to work on the
project, including over 1,100 residents from the local community, including
women, youth and representation from people living with disabilities.
Construction
of the hospital included 42,000 m² of concrete;
136 000m² formwork, including post-tensioned, coffer and flat slabs;
5,300 tons reinforcement; and 35,000m² of vinyl laid on 2-mm
self-levelling screed, and among the many innovative features of the new
state-of-the-art facility is a special rain harvesting system aimed at reducing
the use of valuable drinking water for ablution and irrigation requirements.
Enza
Construction is a 99% black-owned firm with a management team boasting over 100
years collective experience in the building and construction industry. As a
Level 1 BBBEE Contributor with a Level 9 GB CIDB grading Enza Construction is a
true South African success story.
