A construction worker believed to be in his early 50s
died on Monday (January 6) after a building under construction in Benoni South
collapsed while he was inside.

Three other workers who were also inside the building at the
time of its collapse sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital,
where they were in a stable condition.

Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) media
liaison officer William Ntladi said emergency services responded to the scene
on the corner of Liverpool and Bolton roads after receiving the call at 3.18pm.

 “Rescue team and
paramedics from Benoni Central Fire Station responded to the scene and, on
arrival, the casualties were found laid out on the ground, away from the
rubble, to where bystanders had moved them,” said Ntladi.

“As per information on scene, the building was a new
multiple-storey structure.

“Construction had already reached the third-floor level.

“It is alleged that the four employees were removing the
supporting structures from under the concrete slabs prior to the collapse.

“The injured were transported to a local hospital after
paramedical interventions for further medical treatment, while the deceased was
removed from the scene by forensic pathologists.”

Ntladi added that the scene was handed over to the SAPS for further investigations.https://benonicitytimes.co.za/364417/one-killed-three-others-hospitalised-after-building-collapses-in-benoni-south/
