Despite the troubled times in the construction industry, Concor Western Cape continues with a range of quality projects in and around Cape Town, where the company’s legacy has been indelibly stamped for more than a century.
“Our close relationship with developers, consultants and clients over many years ensures that we are always aware of what is happening in the market, and what the industry requires of us,” Mark Fugard, MD of Concor Western Cape, says. “Even with conditions being depressed, we have secured work where we can deliver value with some of the finest skills and teams in the business.”
Recently completed projects include the Signature Lux 1 hotel, an 80-key establishment outside the waterfront area in an historic building whose situation precedes even the reclamation of the foreshore. Work has now begun on the Signature Lux 2, a larger hotel with 167 beds in the CBD.
“Perhaps one of the most exciting current projects is 16 On Bree,” says Fugard. This will be the tallest residential building in the city centre and is only slightly below the height of Portside, also part of Concor Western Cape’s legacy in Cape Town. It will include two levels of retail and several levels of parking, and will reach 120 metres high, looking onto Bree Street. There will be 38 levels in total, accommodating 380 apartments of various sizes.
“On the Atlantic seaboard, we are busy with two high-end residential developments which are setting the standard for luxury living in Cape Town,” he says. One is a large seven-storey home on Nettleton Road high on the hillside of Clifton, and the other is the Aurum development in Bantry Bay.
The latter comprises eight Aurum Presidential Residences cascading down from Victoria Road to the ocean’s edge and 15 Aurum Luxury Residences rising up the hill above the road. The Presidential Residences are scheduled for completion by year-end.
Quite a different proposition is Roscommon House, a student housing project underway on Main Road in Claremont. This 20,000-m2, 582-bed building will help ease the shortage of student accommodation, providing a choice of room sizes and configurations, and a range of facilities to enhance students’ living and learning experience.
In Claremont is the Draper On Main office block, where the facades will replicate the Cape Malay heritage of the original buildings. Above two levels of basement parking will be ground floor retail, followed by four more parking levels and four office floors.
