A US$ 743m water collector tunnel will be constructed in Murang’a County, Kenya so the county can supply 140 million litres of water per day to Nairobi.

Athi Water Service Board CEO, Malaquen Milgo, confirmed reports, saying that this initiative will help increase of water supply to Nairobi city’s residents because a Nairobi Water master plan study predicts that Nairobi will require 1.2 billion litres of water daily by 2035.

Water will be drawn from flood flows in Irati, Gikigie and Maragua rivers in Murang’a County, directed to Thika dam and then channeled to the new water collector tunnel.

“GIBB Africa Ltd to undertook an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment to ensure that only flood water is channelled into the tunnel and that downstream demand is not impacted,” Milgo said.

The World Bank-funded project is scheduled to begin in February and take three years to be completed.
