While industrial jobs have commonly been dominated by men, companies today are increasingly changing the game as the drive towards gender mainstreaming moves forward. Exemplifying this, Rustenburg-based Linhleko Projects is an established industrial solutions company presenting a strong female presence in the industry. This women’s month, they are placing focus on the women, who are instrumental in driving the company forward in their mission to be the partner of choice in the mineral processing industry and the service provider of choice in the steel fabrication and fencing industries.
Linhleko Projects’ CEO Buang Moloto says: “For us as Linhleko, we will do whatever it takes to uplift women because we know that female empowerment is a problem in South Africa. My message for women this month – and always – is that you don’t need anyone’s permission to take up space, to cement your role in business! You are talented and capable, and you must leverage all you have in your career journey. Own it, and thrive.” Moloto’s deep commitment to equality for women extends far beyond his immediate environment, and his joyful celebration of Linhleko’s support SOS Children’s Villages facilities for girls in particular speaks of a deep conviction.
Plant manager Itumeleng Seabelo is a great example of what is possible through determination. From small beginnings she is now highly qualified in Chemical Engineering and leads a team of 40 at Linhleko. “I love the technical side of my job, where the work I do helps ensure that we produce the highest quality products. At the same time, I take great care in how I manage my team, doing my best to encourage them, stimulate interest and drive their passion.” Her advice to young women is to take maths and science seriously at school. “These subjects are not easy, but they open doors for you which you can’t imagine as a young girl.”
Site supervisor, Koketso Setshedi, has studied multiple aspects of chemical and electrical engineering, and has been enjoying applying her skills and facing new challenges since she joined Linhleko at the start of 2021. Her advice is: “If you want to see yourself in a great position, study hard and learn how to work smart.”
On the production line, Pamela Malibe, Instrumentation Technician, recently joined the team. She ensures the valves, flowmeters, pressure probes, and level transmitters work to keep the production process flowing according to plan to produce an excellent final product. “Growing up with my dad as an electrician and my older sister as an electrical supervisor motivated me to pursue a career in the technical industry. My sister, as a woman in mining, was especially inspirational. My advice to women is to never limit yourself. Don’t listen to people who think they know what you are and aren’t capable of. You can do anything you put your mind to.”
Finally, Shift Leader Lina Moloi says she pursued a career in mining to challenge the status quo and explore new opportunities for women. She joined the company in 2019 and is largely responsible for plant optimisation. “I look at our production targets and the quality of our product, applying my skills to ensure Linhleko can maintain its good reputation. My message for women is that there is space for you to grow in this industry! Be patient with yourself as you work your way up.”
With a powerhouse team of women, Linhleko Projects exemplifies the importance of encouraging women into the industrial industries. With more role models such as these, the sector is well on its way to seeing sustainable transformation.
