Preparation works will get underway this week for the demolition of a decrepit building in Geelong’s CBD.
The City of Greater Geelong announced last month it was taking control of the Belchers Corner building on the intersection of Ryrie and Moorabool streets.
The council said at the time it was taking the move because of continued breaches of an Emergency Order that had been put in place to maintain public safety.
The structure is riddled with ‘concrete cancer’, a condition that results from corrosion in the steel reinforcement in concrete slabs, beams and columns.
The city has repeatedly reassured the public there is no immediate safety risk, even though the building was evacuated and declared uninhabitable some 18 months ago.
It cannot be occupied or restored.
