BAKWENA ROLLS OUT TAP & TO TECHNOLOGY ALONG N1N4 ROUTE

28 July 2021

Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire (Pty) Ltd, (Bakwena) places great emphasis on the safety and mobility of road users travelling the N1N4 toll route.

With the country currently experiencing the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for all to heed to stricter COVID-19 precautionary measures, Bakwena is excited and proud to roll out its Tap and Go technology at selected plazas along the route.

This technology was extensively tested and refined through a pilot project which ran during the initial stages of lockdown in 2020. Based on the pilot project’s success, this technology has been installed at busy commuter mainline and ramp plazas on the N1 and N4 route which include Stormvoel, Zambesi, Pumulani, Wallmansthal, Carousel plaza as well as Doornpoort plaza on the N4.

Motorists can enjoy the following benefits while utilizing this system:

  • COVID-19 safe
  • Avoid cash payment queues.
  • Reduces travel time
  • Enables you to accurately budget your monthly commuter costs through your credit card statement

The technology allows you to either swipe or tap your South African credit card with ease and get through the plaza as quickly and efficiently as possible, completely eliminating any interaction with plaza staff.

Bakwena COO, Solomon Kganyago says Bakwena embarked on this journey after achieving its Payment Card Industry specific, “Level One” Merchant certification which paved the way for Bakwena to be at the forefront of managing IT security cyber threats for its customers, within the tolling industry.

Kganyago says Bakwena requires fast and efficient systems which can process card payments for between 250 to 300 vehicles per hour.  We do not offer Pin Entry Devices (PEDs) for card payments as its likely to result in a build-up of queues at the plazas. In the interest of safety, we encourage motorists to refrain from paying with cash where possible.

Using this technology ensures our road users journeys are as seamless, safe and enjoyable as possible.
